   Peter Yates is a versatile director who has covered numerous subjects utilizing different styles. Two of his early British films, Summer Holiday (1963) and Robbery (1967), reflect different aspects of English cultural life in the 1960s. The former, a musical starring Cliff Richard, romanticized teenagers’ newfound freedom, while the latter, based on the Great Train Robbery, aimed to uncover the world of British organized crime. The car chase in Robbery led to Yates directing the thriller Bullitt (1968), which starred Steve McQueen. Numerous films followed in the 1970s including an Oscar nomination as Best Director for his cycling movie Breaking Away (1979), a story depicting class conflict in America. He received a similar nomination for The Dresser (1983).
